Bird’s Botanicals Bio

Meet David Bird

David Bird has been growing orchids since 1978.  On a family trip to Hawaii when he was a kid, he bought his first five orchids.  Working at the Denver Botanical Garden with orchids and managing the orchid greenhouse in college, just made the addition all the sweeter.  After receiving a BS degree in Horticulture at North Dakota State University, David started his horticulture career at the International Peace Garden. the Des Moines Botanical Center came calling and David became the horticulurist and developed a large Oncidum collection.  David then became a horticulturist at Powell Gardens, nere Kansas City, MO where he started an orchid exhibit that is still an annual event.  This exhibit led David into launching Bird’s Botancials.

The Perfect Evironment

Bird’s Botanicals started as a home-based greenhouse business with 400 square feet of growing space.  David continues to make his much-loved annual trips to Hawaii working with growers on new and improved orchids.  Now located in a climate controlled cave, the orchids have the perfect growing environment.  With over 10, 000 orchids thriving and blooming, it’s quite a site to behold.
